As you know, for many years my interest in painting and hill-walking were kept well apart.  My work was based around man-made environments, building sites; townscapes etc and the days spent in the hills were just for fun.   When I moved to Scotland in 1998 however, things started to change.  After attending a very successful mountain skills course for visually impaired people at Glenmore Lodge in 2001, I met up with Guy Hansford (one of the fully sighted volunteer guides on the course) and with his help and that of the folk in our local mountaineering club Air na Creagan, we started tackling more serious hills and getting out into the wilds on a very regular basis.  In February 2002, Guy and I joined 11 members of Air na Creagan on a weekend trip to Corrour and on the Saturday we headed into the hills on a day that was to change my work as an artist.  We experienced a ‘proper’ Scottish hill day …..one that included all four seasons in just a few hours, from patchy sunshine and heavy clouds, to driving snow and back to almost cloudless skies and bright sunshine.  At the end of the day I realised that I just had to start using all these amazing views and scenes as the basis for my paintings …..the rest, as they say….. .   Now, when I’m out walking I’m constantly looking for things that I might be able to use in my paintings.  Hill-walking is not just for fun now …it’s work too!  It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it!

Anyway, you’ve heard all that before, but on Tuesday, we once again joined forces with our friend Guy and headed up to Ben Lomond for a leisurely wander together.  We had picked another perfect day and the misty atmospheric conditions as we started, quickly cleared and by lunchtime we had bright sunshine .  Our walk took us up the normal ‘tourist’ route until we reached  the long almost flat section at around 600m.  It had been a great ascent and we heard lots of different birds as we passed through the lower now partially wooded sections …including a very active woodpecker somewhere close by… ..it was really wonderful.

From the 600m mark though, we left the main path with its walkers making their way to the summit, and instead, cut off down the side of the hill to reach a perfectly quiet and secluded spot by the stream that flows from between the main bulk of Ben Lomond and the Ptarmigan ridge.  This was the perfect lunch spot and being out of the breeze, it was really quite hot too.  A short way further on and we picked up the Ptarmigan path which we followed back to our starting point.  The views out over Loch Lomond from this path are wonderful and on Tuesday the loch was almost completely calm, reflecting the big clouds and skies.  As we looked down I suddenly noticed that  I was looking at something that quite closely resembled the new large 120 x 120 cm canvas I’m working on…….it was quite strange to see!

I sometimes forget just how little I can see ….until that is my PC crashes and I have to try and use this laptop.  It’s not that it’s actually any more difficult to use, it’s just that its different.  The  answer to being visually impaired I think, is routine.  When suddenly what you’re used to is unavailable, things get a whole lot more challenging ….and more importantly, when you’re running a business, time consuming.  You know what they say about time being money ?  As my sight has got worse over the years, small problems with the computer become large ones and I seem to spend more of my time working on the computer than I do on the paintings……or it certainly seems like that!  As an example of this ….I’ve now spent almost an hour and a half just getting this laptop booted up and getting to this point.  Ahhhhh! 

Anyway, I’ll stop my moaning and get on with the blog ….which is far from staggering around in the dark ….it’s about the opposite in fact …..it’s about wandering over the fine little tops of the Pentland Hills the other day.   Our last walk, in the snow around Loch Ossian the other week, was great but we really needed to get a few metres of ascent and descent into our legs this time.  As usual we were looking to follow the best weather and after changing our plans at the last minute, we decided to head over to the east and enjoy our annual visit to the Pentlands.  These hills are not huge in any way but there is a bit of ascent and descent between each one so at the end of the day you feel like you’ve had a good walk.

The forecast seemed to get it right as after a very wet drive over from Irvine, as we neared the hills, the cloud broke and the sun started to come out.  By the time we’d got the boots on it was looking really good.  At the point where the path starts heading up towards Turnhouse Hill, it takes a small footbridge over a stream and as we crossed, Nita spotted a Dipper sitting on a rock not far away.  It was great as with a few directions I managed to find it with my monocular.   From this point, the path climbs at first gently and then more steeply to reach the top of Turnhouse Hill.  It’s a fabulous view point and I guess, needs to be as by this time the legs are complaining somewhat!   The big views however, continued for the rest of the day as we wandered along the ridge.  Nita could see the two bridges over the Firth of Forth, as well as  Edinburgh airport with the planes coming and going.  It’s quite strange to be up in the hills and yet so close to a city.

Our original plans had  simply been to walk along the ridge to West Kip before descending into the glen and walking back along the single track road  past the two reservoirs.  However, as we approached the summit of Scald Law, (the highest point in this group of hills) I remembered South Black Hill ….a top that rises to the south west of Scald Law and somewhere we’d never been to before.  It seemed well worth a detour and being to the south of the main line of hills, gave some wonderfully different views.  It was about at this point that Nita suggested that instead of walking back along the road in the glen, we go back the way we’d come ….thus giving us a few more metres of ascent and descent.  It seemed like a good idea and made a great little day.  As we got back to the wee footbridge we were given a quick fly-by from the Dipper and on walking the final few hundred metres through the woods to the car park …we were treated to the sound of a woodpecker on one of the trees….what a great way to finish a day.

When I feel like I’m staggering around in the dark using the computer, I just have to remind myself of all the hills I walk and the paintings I paint!

One of my colleagues at the Courtyard Studios, Margaret Carslaw, nearly always works on a large scale.  Her drawings and paintings are rarely smaller than 120 x 120 cm and usually bigger.  As someone who generally works on pieces that are less than a metre square, I’ve always found it fascinating seeing Margaret’s large paintings and watching how she approaches them.  Over the years we’ve had many discussions about our work and she’s tried to persuade me of the merits of working on a large scale while I’ve been trying to persuade her that it’s just as challenging working on something small!  I guess when it comes down to it, we’re probably both right but I’ve certainly found myself drifting towards creating larger work.

Of course, all the creative bumf aside, there is a practical side to this which if you want to exhibit and sell work, does come into it ……..the simple question of how to transport large works.  When we changed vehicles back in 2010 we had originally thought of getting a small van instead of a car.  It seemed to make sense except for the fact that we occasionally need to carry passengers…..apart from the legality or otherwise of it, we didn’t think our friend Guy would enjoy sitting on the floor bouncing around in the back of a van all the way to Glencoe and back and Nita’s parents on their annual visit certainly wouldn’t enjoy the experience either, even if it was just to go down to the Harbourside!  So then, Nita spent many hours pawing through the ‘What car’ magazines before finally coming up with a Citroen Nemo …..a boxy thing that would take a lot of paintings up to a metre wide and a vehicle that was very economic too.  It’s been a very good compromise and I can fit a lot of this smaller sized work in it when I need to and Guy and Nita’s parents can ride in it comfortably.

As I say though, I’ve gradually been moving towards doing larger work and decided last year that I had, in the exhibition / drawing project arranged for Nov / Dec at the our neighbouring Harbour Arts Centre, an excuse to do a couple of larger paintings …..it’s less than 100 metres from the Courtyard to the HAC so no vehicles needed to transport the work ….I can simply carry the paintings across.   I bought what for me is quite a large canvas ….120 x 120 cm back before Christmas and started work on it almost straight away.

It’s been a really good experience and I decided from the outset that I’d try using my father’s big old horse hair house painting brush on this painting.  I want it to be quite bold as well as quite textural.  The brush is at least six inches wide and the course hairs leave wonderful marks in the thick oil paint.   Four months on from starting it, the painting is still in progress but starting to come together now. I’ve been spending a day on it and then letting the paint dry for a few days so that I can build up overlapping layers of colour and mark.  The painting is a reworking of an idea I had back in 2008 but which at the time I did on a much smaller scale and in a landscape format.   I want the painting to be as much about the colour, composition and texture as about the landscape…..but as usual will try to create a balance between the two.

Anyway, with this piece well under way, I’ve just made a note to order another 120 x 120 cm canvas as well as something around 120 x 40 cm ……this to create something based on the wild snow covered landscape that we experienced around Corrour the other week.  Margaret may well be winning the battle of wills…..I seem to be getting hooked on doing bigger work!  And what about my transportation argument I hear you shout?  Well, just last week a lady visited my studio who is planning to set up a small business in the area transporting artwork in a large van she owns.  She’s a painter herself…..so if she gets set up, transporting the occasional large canvas may not be so problematic…..that’s my excuse anyway!

Although nearly all my paintings are based on the Scottish upland landscape I do like to try and find new ways of interpreting it. I’ve spent nearly all of the last week working on an 80 x 80 cm canvas in oil.  It’s quite a loose piece and I’ve just used the large horse hair house painting brush to create the marks on it.

The starting point for the piece was a section of a painting I did several years ago about the peaks of the Blackmount, in particular Clach Leath and it’s wonderful southern face that always seems to catch the snow .  In the winter months it stands out from most vantage points to the east, especially as you drive across the edge of Rannoch Moor on the A82 and in particular from the gentle ridge of Ghlas Bheinne.  I’ve taken numerous photos of it over the years as it always grabs your attention and in spring 2012 we walked right underneath it on two occasions as we headed up the glen from Ba Bridge.

Since starting to work once again in oil on canvas, I’ve wanted to try and create much more abstract paintings.  I want them still to be about the wild Scottish landscape but in a much looser way. I’ve created a number of these oil on canvas paintings over the last couple of years and am always trying to develop them.   I decided therefore to start from a slightly different place with these new paintings ….instead of using photographs and sketches I’ve selected a section from one of my earlier paintings.  This gives me a far more abstract starting point but one that is still landscape based.

As I say, the new painting is being created using just one brush ….a large coarse haired house painting brush approximately 7 inches wide and at least an inch thick.  I’ve been building the painting up using quite thick oil paint and putting it down in rough, raw strokes and a very limited palette.  This coarse haired brush leaves fine textures in the wet paint that once dry, gives an interesting surface over which to put down the next stroke.  The painting is still not finished but I think it is starting to go in the right direction.  The problem, as always, is trying to get the balance between the need by me to create a landscape painting as well as one that is abstract too……this can so easily lead to a painting that looks false and awkward.  Oh well, I’ve just ordered a load more paint so it’s just a case of keeping on painting and hopefully learning.  That I guess, is what painting for me is all about.

Glen Rosa – a working walk

Don’t be too shocked, we finally got the boots on again and made it across to the Isle of Arran yesterday. As you know, I’ve wanted to get back to Glen Rosa for the last couple of months but the extremely poor weather has until yesterday, kept us at bay.

Have to say that it didn’t look altogether promising as we disembarked from the ferry in Brodick at eight o’clock yesterday morning ….it was absolutely pouring down with rain and we got quite wet just getting the 100 metres to the waiting room where we’d planned to don the waterproofs. Of course by the time we had all the gear on the rain had passed and as we walked along the promenade the first breaks in the dark cloud were appearing.

It’s always a good walk from Brodick to Glen Rosa and well worth doing just for the spectacular scenery but this trip was a working one. With the plans for creating a big Glen Rosa drawing all arranged with the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine later in the year, I needed to get back to the glen in order to start planning how exactly I’m going to do the piece. Yesterdays visit to the glen was to look at and record the first half of the glen. I wanted to spend time looking and thinking and making a few simple sketches.

As we entered the glen a Golden Eagle flew overhead, low enough for me to see it ….it made a good start to our day. Up to this point it had been difficult to know quite how much snow there was on the hills as the cloud level had been very low, but things quickly improved and we started getting glimpses of Beinn Nuis and Beinn a’ Chliabhain, the summits of both looking white and wintry.

A little further on and the glen swings around to the NW and at this point the views open up even more and the fine peak of Cir Mhor stands dramatically at the head of the glen. With the cloud rising and breaking and the periods of blue sky and bright sun increasing, we got some wonderful views and the colours were really quite intense at times. I spent a lot of time standing or sitting doing some quick sketches as we made our way up the footpath at the side of the river. Nita was busy taking photos and was particularly interested in the river that was full and busy but with incredibly clear water ……in the bright sun the patterns of the rocks underneath the water looked wonderful.

It was a very profitable day and I got a lot of information in the way of sketches and photographs. I’m still not one hundred per cent sure how I’m going to do this big drawing but I have come away with a much better idea. Now I need to get up to the head of the glen and record that section.

Last week I moaned about having problems with my newly updated computer.  Now then, I have to admit that I’m not the most computer literate person in the world and so trying to get everything back to normal has proved a little challenging!  Thankfully Nita is up for a challenge and she’s been spending a good few hours sat at this machine sorting things out for me. 

As I think I said in a previous blog , I’ve also  just changed the magnification and screen reader  software I use. This new software, Zoomtext, seems to be excellent but again, there’s a lot of new things to learn, so this, coupled with a rather new look Windows 7, is taking a lot of time to find my way around. Nita has done an excellent job and she’s re-loaded most of my software and it seems to be working quite well now…..I think I’ll have to buy Nita some chocolates and a bottle of wine as a thank you for all her work.

I’ve been working on a new painting this week and it’s starting to come on now.  It’s based on a small scene we saw in Glen Rosa last January and I was rather hoping to get back over there again yesterday in order to start doing some serious planning for the big drawing  project.  The forecast had been excellent, calm, dry and reasonably bright ….it would have been the perfect day.  We’d got it all booked and had planned to catch the 7 o’clock ferry over so that we’d get the maximum time to wander through the glen, stopping to do sketches and take some photos.   Unfortunately my plans fell apart on Wednesday when a courier I’d booked, failed to collect!  Ahhhhh!  I’d waited at the studio all day but somehow the courier couldn’t find me!  So, they said that they’d  try again the next day …Thursday.  I’m glad to say that the painting was finally collected, albeit a day late and with a bit of luck …it’ll be delivered safely sometime today.   We’re now hoping that we might be able to get over to Arran this weekend or sometime next week; I’ll be checking the Mountain Weather information Service again and hoping for another fine day

Happy Christmas from a wet and windy Irvine…

Well then, I’m running very late this week, so it’s going to be a very short little blog.

We still haven’t managed to get out walking and I think that by the time we get a decent bit of weather, my legs with be well out of condition! Oh well, it really hasn’t been very good this last few weeks with very strong winds and heavy rain and snow on the mountains. So then, I’ve been getting on with the work at the studio. I’ve mainly been working on the An Teallach commission and it’s starting to come together now ….but much work still to be done I think.

The other thing I’ve been doing is working with the photographer Daniel Thornton who visited Irvine and stayed with Nita and me for a couple of days. He’s started work on a documentary film about my work and its connection with the Scottish hills and landscape. He spent quite a time recording interviews in the studio and is planning to do more on his next trip over to Scotland from his home town in Seattle. It was very interesting talking with Dan over the course of his visit as his own work is based on the landscape. We both approach our work very differently but both have a real love for the wild places …..he showed me a couple of the photographs he took when he was with us in Glen Rosa back in March and I have to say, they were superb. I was really impressed. I’m really looking forward to working with him further and maybe, if he’s up for it, we can put on an exhibition of our work together sometime.

Anyway, that’s this short blog done for the week. I’m back in the studio for the next two days and am then having a relaxing couple of days off with Nita over Christmas. Must admit that I’m really looking forward to putting my feet up and the paint brushes down!

Plans for some more footage

You may remember that earlier this year I met photographer Daniel Thornton at the Preview to my exhibition at ‘the gallery on the corner’.   After seeing the work he asked if he could come over to Irvine and take some film in the studio, which he did a few weeks later.  As we got talking we realised that we had similar interests in wild places and although our approaches to our respective art forms is somewhat different, we are both using landscape as the basis for our work.

Dan then joined us for a couple of walks in the hills.  He was interested in seeing how Nita guided me on rough paths and open hillsides and on our first walk, in Glen Rosa on the Isle of Arran, he took quite a lot of film as well as recording a short interview between his friend David Feeney and I.   It was during this walk that I told them about my plans to create a large drawing based on this glen.  During our slow wander to the head of the glen and back, ideas of how I could develop the project were thrown around and I think that it was at the end of this walk that what at the start of the day had been just an idea, had by the close become a positive plan.

Following this day, I gradually honed the idea further and in late August put a detailed proposal together to do the large drawing as part of an exhibition at the Harbour Arts Centre here in Irvine.   They were very keen on the project and I’ve been offered the gallery for about two months late next year.  This is perfect for me as it now gives me the whole of this winter to go back to Glen Rosa and start to really plan in more detail how I compose this large piece of work.

Dan, who is based in Seattle, is currently back over in Scotland and on Wednesday he visited my studio again.   After our walks in the spring he created a short 10 minute long film from the footage and recordings he made. ….if you haven’t already seen it then click on the link at the end of the blog.  Apparently he’s had a good response to it and is now keen to develop this into a longer documentary piece.  He asked whether Nita and I would be willing to spend several days with him so that he can shoot more footage.  He is also very interested in using the drawing project as an integral part of the film.  I’m very happy to do this as not only will it be a good way of promoting my work, it will be fun and very interesting too, especially as I’ll hopefully learn a lot more about Dan’s own work.

As he was leaving Irvine on Wednesday evening to travel back to Edinburgh, he asked whether I could find any photos showing some of my early work along with any photographs from some of my early walks.  I don’t really have many such photos to hand but the one above is one taken by my friend Mervin, of Nita and I on Cada Indris in mid Wales in late December 1987 …this was one of the first proper mountain walks Nita had done …we’d only met back in the summer that year.  Great hair, great hat, great day!!!  Not sure if this is really what Dan is after but it made me laugh  when I found it!

Yesterday, for what must be the umpteenth time over the years, I was asked this question. ’How do you do these paintings if you can’t see very much?’  And in all fairness, it’s a good question to ask ….and a very difficult one to answer, especially when I peer around my studio at the, (for me) fuzzy blobs on the wall that are my paintings, or when I remember just the other day, walking down High Street in Irvine trying to find a shop ….and walking instead into a very solid electrical box mounted on the pavement…..or talking to our cat only to find out I’ve been  talking to my Welly boots!  Yes, it’s a very good question and one that I ask myself sometimes too.

Last evening for instance, I was sat in my rocking chair down at the studio, scribbling away at some small drawings in a sketch book.  I was getting quite frustrated at just how difficult it was getting.  Only a few years ago I could still scribble with a little bit of accuracy using a fine drawing pen.  Now, sat in the same chair with the same size small six inch square sketch book and an 8B graphite pencil I was struggling to make out what I was doing.  But it didn’t matter …..I was still drawing, even if in a slightly different manner from a few years ago.  I could still make out the gist of it and if I photographed the small drawings I could then see them on my computer screen using the screen magnification software…..and if needed, print them up to a size that I could use and see more clearly.

Like everything I do these days, it’s just a question of adapting…..of thinking my way around the problem of how to do something rather than stopping because the way I used to work is no longer feasible.

So then, the answer to that inevitable question is that over the years I’ve just very gradually adapted my ways of working to the level of sight I have.  My work is as it is, because of this process, but I like to think too, that it is as it is, primarily, because I’m quite good at what I do ….being a painter that is!  The three little scribbled drawings shown here are not me at my best, but they are part of the process that leads to the better work.

Well then, that’s the Open Weekend over for another year and I’ve already ‘un-tidied’ the studio and am getting back to the work again. It’s amazing, after all the work that goes into the event, just how quickly it passes by. It was though, a very successful weekend with I think, just over 300 visitors to the studios. After speaking with many of my colleagues, I think most were very happy and had made either sales or useful contacts…..and for me, it was a bit of both.

My Open Weekend actually started on Friday afternoon as I was still putting the finishing touches to the studio. A gentleman came in and immediately took a fancy to one of the large 80 x 80 cm paintings. He spent a lot of time looking at it before leaving. He was back about an hour later asking if he could put a deposit on the painting ….so a very good start to the weekend…..and over the next couple of days another of the 80 x 80 cm paintings was also purchased making it the most successful ever Open Weekend for me. Of course, this event is not just about selling work, it is, perhaps more importantly, about people finding your studio, seeing the work and hopefully then going on to tell others about it. This really is the time to make contacts and with over 300 people coming into the courtyard this year, it was very successful in this aspect too. Of course, a successful event comes about from promoting it well and although we all did our part here at the studios, a big thank you must go out to all the local businesses and organisations who agreed to put our posters up and to the local newspapers and radio who gave us such good coverage.

I always think though, that once the Open Weekend is over, winter is just around the corner. As we left the studio yesterday evening under the last light of an almost clear sky, the temperature was decidedly on the wintry side. With all the pre open weekend work, Nita and I haven’t been out walking for almost four weeks now and with both of us working this weekend it’ll be next week before we get out again. Before we do, I think it’ll be time to check the rucksack and start putting back into it, all the extra gear I took out in the hot weather of July. I’ll also have to check the winter boots, crampons and spiders to make sure they are in good condition ready for the first time they are called into action. It’s incredible ….it only seemed a very short while ago that we were walking in t-shirts and complaining that it was too hot!
