Over the years I’ve had many people ask if I have painted the Isle of Arran from over on the Ayrshire coast.  I finally decided to have a go and this new 76 x 23 cm painting is the result.  For me to see Arran from the coast near my studio I have to use a monocular and so this is I guess the kind of view I see.

The painting is not yet framed but is in my studio now if anyone wants to call by to see it……although you’d best give a quick call first (07742 437425) just to check I’ll be there ….it’s that time of year again and we’re starting to go walking more regularly!

Glen Rosa – a working walk

Don’t be too shocked, we finally got the boots on again and made it across to the Isle of Arran yesterday. As you know, I’ve wanted to get back to Glen Rosa for the last couple of months but the extremely poor weather has until yesterday, kept us at bay.

Have to say that it didn’t look altogether promising as we disembarked from the ferry in Brodick at eight o’clock yesterday morning ….it was absolutely pouring down with rain and we got quite wet just getting the 100 metres to the waiting room where we’d planned to don the waterproofs. Of course by the time we had all the gear on the rain had passed and as we walked along the promenade the first breaks in the dark cloud were appearing.

It’s always a good walk from Brodick to Glen Rosa and well worth doing just for the spectacular scenery but this trip was a working one. With the plans for creating a big Glen Rosa drawing all arranged with the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine later in the year, I needed to get back to the glen in order to start planning how exactly I’m going to do the piece. Yesterdays visit to the glen was to look at and record the first half of the glen. I wanted to spend time looking and thinking and making a few simple sketches.

As we entered the glen a Golden Eagle flew overhead, low enough for me to see it ….it made a good start to our day. Up to this point it had been difficult to know quite how much snow there was on the hills as the cloud level had been very low, but things quickly improved and we started getting glimpses of Beinn Nuis and Beinn a’ Chliabhain, the summits of both looking white and wintry.

A little further on and the glen swings around to the NW and at this point the views open up even more and the fine peak of Cir Mhor stands dramatically at the head of the glen. With the cloud rising and breaking and the periods of blue sky and bright sun increasing, we got some wonderful views and the colours were really quite intense at times. I spent a lot of time standing or sitting doing some quick sketches as we made our way up the footpath at the side of the river. Nita was busy taking photos and was particularly interested in the river that was full and busy but with incredibly clear water ……in the bright sun the patterns of the rocks underneath the water looked wonderful.

It was a very profitable day and I got a lot of information in the way of sketches and photographs. I’m still not one hundred per cent sure how I’m going to do this big drawing but I have come away with a much better idea. Now I need to get up to the head of the glen and record that section.

Plans for some more footage

You may remember that earlier this year I met photographer Daniel Thornton at the Preview to my exhibition at ‘the gallery on the corner’.   After seeing the work he asked if he could come over to Irvine and take some film in the studio, which he did a few weeks later.  As we got talking we realised that we had similar interests in wild places and although our approaches to our respective art forms is somewhat different, we are both using landscape as the basis for our work.

Dan then joined us for a couple of walks in the hills.  He was interested in seeing how Nita guided me on rough paths and open hillsides and on our first walk, in Glen Rosa on the Isle of Arran, he took quite a lot of film as well as recording a short interview between his friend David Feeney and I.   It was during this walk that I told them about my plans to create a large drawing based on this glen.  During our slow wander to the head of the glen and back, ideas of how I could develop the project were thrown around and I think that it was at the end of this walk that what at the start of the day had been just an idea, had by the close become a positive plan.

Following this day, I gradually honed the idea further and in late August put a detailed proposal together to do the large drawing as part of an exhibition at the Harbour Arts Centre here in Irvine.   They were very keen on the project and I’ve been offered the gallery for about two months late next year.  This is perfect for me as it now gives me the whole of this winter to go back to Glen Rosa and start to really plan in more detail how I compose this large piece of work.

Dan, who is based in Seattle, is currently back over in Scotland and on Wednesday he visited my studio again.   After our walks in the spring he created a short 10 minute long film from the footage and recordings he made. ….if you haven’t already seen it then click on the link at the end of the blog.  Apparently he’s had a good response to it and is now keen to develop this into a longer documentary piece.  He asked whether Nita and I would be willing to spend several days with him so that he can shoot more footage.  He is also very interested in using the drawing project as an integral part of the film.  I’m very happy to do this as not only will it be a good way of promoting my work, it will be fun and very interesting too, especially as I’ll hopefully learn a lot more about Dan’s own work.

As he was leaving Irvine on Wednesday evening to travel back to Edinburgh, he asked whether I could find any photos showing some of my early work along with any photographs from some of my early walks.  I don’t really have many such photos to hand but the one above is one taken by my friend Mervin, of Nita and I on Cada Indris in mid Wales in late December 1987 …this was one of the first proper mountain walks Nita had done …we’d only met back in the summer that year.  Great hair, great hat, great day!!!  Not sure if this is really what Dan is after but it made me laugh  when I found it!

Well, as I said just a short while ago on my Face Book page (Keith Salmon – Scottish Landscape Artist) this morning Nita saw the first snow of this winter over on the mountains on the Isle of Arran.

When I was walking over in Glen Rosa in January and again in March, I started to develop an idea to create a large (4.5 x 1.5 m) drawing based on the idea of walking through the glen in winter.  Over the intervening months I’ve developed the idea and recently put a proposal to the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine ….the idea is to use their large main gallery wall to create this new drawing.  They’ve agreed to let me use the gallery next November / December (2014) to do the work and while I create the piece I’ll also hold an exhibition of my usual smaller paintings.  Anyway, I’ll write more about that nearer the time.

This little painting is one that I did following our walks in Glen Rosa earlier this year. With the new snow once again starting to fall on the mountains around the glen, I’m going to be going back there soon to start honing my idea for the big drawing, spending time looking, planning, sketching and taking photos.  It should be a fun time and I’m really looking forward to the project …this time next year it should be well under way!

A busy little week…

This time last week, (Saturday 14 at 13.17), Nita and I were sat with some friends Stewart and Evelyn on a rocky little top overlooking Glencoe.  We’d not walked far, just followed the West Highland Way up to the high point of the Devil’s Staircase and headed north up the grass and heather slopes to the first little summit at around 800m.  It was however a wonderful view point and we’d been very lucky with the weather.  It was I guess the perfect Glencoe weather …a mix of bright sun and dark heavy shower clouds that rolled in filling the glen with mist and rain before passing on over Rannoch Moor.  Stewart, an Irvine man, has been living in Germany with his wife Evelyn for many years and so I think he particularly enjoyed seeing this very special bit of Scotland in very special Scottish conditions.

The rest of my week was spent either at my studio or standing on the harbour side waiting to see if the grand old clipper, City of Adelaide would finally start her journey by barge down to London.  Getting this vast wooden ship on a barge out of the River Irvine needed a lot of skill, two tugs and some reasonably fine weather.  The latter was the problem for the first part of the week, with constant gales or at least high winds.  All looked good on Thursday morning and a big crowd once again gathered at the mouth of the River Irvine to witness this historical event but at the last minute with the wind picking up, the wise decision was made to once again call it off.  Finally, on Friday lunchtime, with the crowds once again lining the harbour side, the City of Adelaide was towed out to sea to start its trip down to London.  As I write, it’s now well into the Irish Sea apparently ….so good luck to all on board.  I’m not sure of the exact time table but it will be heading to Greenwich for a short while before being lifted onto a really big container ship for the long voyage down to Adelaide.  If you are interested and haven’t already found it, www.cityofadelaide.org.au is a great website and has masses of information and photos.

Art wise, it’s been a good week too.  I’ve had a week of working on an 80 x 80 cm oil painting.  It is as you can see, a more abstract piece created using a large house painting brush and lots of thick oil paint.  I’ve been enjoying working like this after several weeks of doing finer, tighter acrylic and pastel pieces.  Not sure what to make of it though ….so will have to wait and see.

Finally, yesterday I also had a visit from a couple from Edinburgh.  They’ve been following my work on-line for a good while now and decided to call into the studio on their way back from a short holiday on the Isle of Arran.  They left my studio an hour later with two of my paintings …..including one of the new Harris pieces.  So then …a very big thanks to them and I hope they get much pleasure from the paintings once they are up on their wall.

I’m spending today trying to get the press release and photos together to send to the local papers and radio stations in order to promote our Open Studios Weekend on Saturday 5th / Sunday 6th October.  The event posters and flyers have been printed and are starting to get displayed …if you live in the region you may see one soon.  I’ll be sending out flyers and email invitations to all who have left their names in my visitors book, but remember, the event is open to all and is free ….so mark it in your diary and come along and enjoy seeing a great selection of work produced by some of Ayrshire’s leading artists, including; painting, drawing, prints, ceramics, stained glass, hand book-binding, photography and jewellery….one of the artists, Alison Thomas, will even be running some drop-in workshops for children too.  Hope to see you at the studios on Saturday 5th October (11am – 5pm), or Sunday 6th October (12 noon – 5pm).

This is the latest of my 76 x 23 cm paintings. It can be seen in my studio at present ….although I’m not completely sure whether it’s finished yet and I might still have a bit of work to do on it! For any one who hasn’t been to Glen Sannox, it’s a wonderful place with high rocky ridges on both sides and the dramatic peak of Cir Mhor rising above the Saddle at the end. With my sight a little worse these days, the ridges are probably now a little out of my league, but the glen is still a beautiful place to wander and I’ll definitely be making more visits.

As you’ll probably have seen, I’ve been working on several large graphite drawings based on our visits to Glen Rosa on the Isle of Arran recently.  This is a new painting I’ve just completed based on the same subject matter.  We had walked up to the head of the glen below Cir Mhor and The Saddle.  It was cold and grey with snow on the tops and cloud hiding the summits too.  Then, just as we were about to return, it filled in further and started to snow.  This continued all the way back down the glen.  It was certainly a taste of things to come …this was the Wednesday before the heavy snow arrived that caused so many problems on the island a short while ago.  The painting is away to the framer soon and it will then be at the studio should anyone want to come and see it for real.  I’ll let you know when I have it back and on the wall.

You may remember that back in the summer of 2010 when I was working over in Speyer in southern Germany, I made a very large drawing.  On that occasion it was based on the idea of walking around the outside of the huge cathedral that dominates the historic city of Speyer.  It was like a very large, (4 m x 1.5 m) sketch, made using different shades of grey oil pastel.  At the time I thought it might be my only opportunity to create such a large drawing and it was hugely enjoyable working on such a scale.

More recently, I started working on some new small graphite drawings based on the hills and mountains.  I’ve been quite excited by these new drawings but even as I was doing them I felt that they would work much better on a larger scale.  To start with I was really only thinking about moving up from A2 size to perhaps double A1 size, but then when we visited the Isle of Arran and did a walk up Glen Rosa a couple of months ago, I started to get an idea for another really big drawing!  As we walked up the glen that day with the mountains all around and covered with snow, it started me thinking that this was almost the opposite to the Speyer cathedral ….where as the drawing I did of that was about walking around the huge building, here in Glen Rosa it was like walking inside a huge natural structure.  Perhaps, I thought, I could create a big graphite drawing that conveyed something of the experience of being in this spectacular place.

The walls in my studio aren’t really suited to doing a large drawing as they are made from concrete blocks and have many pipes and electrical conduits running down them.   It would however be possible to build a ‘false wall’ in front of this to create a large, smooth drawing surface and so this might be the way to go.  The other option though might be to see this not just as a chance to do a big drawing but instead to try and make this more of an event, a way to promote both myself as an artist and the work itself.  To do this I’d have to find a suitable public place to do the drawing and to promote the event as an opportunity for people to see the work in progress.  As I anticipate such a drawing taking at least 4 weeks, it might be good for folk to be able to watch the thing develop, see the changes and mistakes; in short, to see the process.  Taking this idea further, it might also be possible to set up a video cam linked to my website so that a much larger audience could watch the drawing develop.

It’s all ideas at the moment but on Wednesday we went back over to the Isle of Arran and headed once again for Glen Rosa. A few months ago I was invited to take part in some research work that was being done into the way visually impaired people perceive paintings.  The research was being done by a chap called David Feeney from Edinburgh, and he recently got back to me to ask whether he could visit my studio and bring along a friend of his who is a film maker / photographer.  It was an interesting few hours and to cut a long story short, they then asked if they could accompany Nita and me on one of our walks.  David was interested in seeing the way Nita and I work together as ‘walker and guide’.

Our original plan was to meet at the Pentland Hills just outside Edinburgh but with heavy snow falling in the east, we decided instead to go over to the Isle of Arran and walk Glen Rosa.  The path up the glen is for me much more difficult than the paths on the Pentland Hills so even though we would not be going up high, David and his colleague Dan would get a much better idea of how the guiding process worked.  Of course it also gave me the opportunity to see the glen again ….and further develop my plans for the big drawing.  Conditions were once again perfect, with snow on the mountains and their tops disappearing into heavy and dramatic clouds.

The walk proved useful for all of us.  Dan got lots of film and photos taken, David asked many questions and I got lots of interesting information from both of them about how I might go about organising my big Glen Rosa drawing.  Nita had an enjoyable walk and took plenty of photos too and we were delighted to find that David and Dan had left us a bottle of wine and some chocolate eggs …..everyone happy!

Sometimes,………there really are advantages to being a visually impaired hill-walker!  Many times I have to admit, there are not!

Yesterday Nita and I headed over to the Isle of Arran to walk Goat Fell, ( the highest point of the island’s magnificent mountains).  A couple of days ago the mountain forecasts seemed to suggest that there was a chance that the cloud would be so low that the higher tops would break through them.  This is a magnificent sight to see and one that we’ve been lucky enough to experience on a couple of occasions in the past ten years. I’d often thought that seeing the dramatic rocky peaks of Arran in such conditions would be very special. It was of course a complete gamble and the chances were that we’d just have a walk in low cloud ….which for the most part we did.

We went across on the first ferry, arriving in Brodick at just before eight o’clock.  It certainly looked promising as we looked across the bay to see a very low thick line of cloud shrouding Goat Fell and I immediately started to imagine the summit being clear and in bright sunshine.  We did our normal thing of walking along past the golf course and up the beach to get to the start of the main ‘tourist’ path up Goat Fell..  It’s a beautiful little walk especially first thing in the morning and it gets the legs going before the need to do any ‘up’!  The path climbs up through the edge of the Brodick Castle grounds before emerging onto the open hillside at a point where for many years a small foot bridge had crossed a small but fast flowing stream.  At this point we were somewhat dismayed to find that a new ‘land rover’ track had been built from the estate to the bridge ….and said bridge had been replaced with a much larger one suitable for vehicles ….a small turning space made on the other side of the stream.  We presumed that this was to help during the stalking season ….the main path up the hill passes through the deer fence by way of a large gate just a short distance further on.

Anyway, we didn’t really think too much about it and continued on our way.  The cloud level though had risen somewhat and our hopes of getting above it at the summit now seemed very unlikely.  It was good to get out again though and even though I was finding it difficult picking my way up the boulder strewn path in this rather gloomy light, I was thoroughly enjoying myself.   We entered the cloud just below the point where the path reaches the main shoulder of the mountain.  There was a brisk cold wind blowing and it encouraged you to keep moving!   From this point the going gets steeper and the path rockier before you emerge at the summit.  In fine weather this is a breath taking moment especially if it’s your first visit to the summit of Goat Fell.  Yesterday however we could have been anywhere, the cloud was quite thick and I certainly didn’t feel like it was going to clear.  It was cold too and after a brief stop for a summit picture we decided we might as well just head back and try and find a spot out of the wind for lunch, lower down. It was surprisingly busy despite the conditions and many people passed us both on the way up and down.  My poor sight makes descending a slow and difficult thing and everyone seemed to go rushing past us.  By mid afternoon we were back below the shoulder of the hill and most of the folk who had walked to the summit had long since got back to their cars.

At this point though, the cloud suddenly started to lift and break and very quickly the scene around us transformed from a dark and sombre one to a beautiful autumn afternoon with bright patches of sunshine illuminating the vivid autumn colours of the moor land around us.  We found a spot out of the breeze and sat down to enjoy the warm afternoon sun, the beautiful views across to Beinn Nuis and the peace and quiet.  This lasted for about half an hour and was then broken by the noise of an engine.  A good way below us Nita said she could see a strange vehicle moving quite quickly and as we watched it was driven at speed across the boggy moor-land below the steep flanks of Goat Fell.  The vehicle and it’s occupants came to a sudden stop about one hundred metres from us ….and everyone got out.  I can only hope that whatever the reason for this off road jaunt, it was a good one as its wheels had scarred the peat, grass and flora of this wild spot.  Perhaps though, this was something to do with the local mountain rescue group…it would certainly get them up the lower slopes of the hill quickly.  Anyway, whatever was going on, we left them to it and continued down the path to the new bridge …where we could plainly see the tracks of the vehicle at the point it had driven onto the moor.

If there was a genuine and urgent reason for this kind of off road vehicle use, then fine, but it would be a great shame if this new track and bridge are just encouraging more irresponsible off road driving enthusiasts

The afternoon was now a very fine one and we had a very pleasant wander back down through the woods to the beach.  The trees in their autumn colours looked stunning in the late low sun.  As I made my way back along the beautiful beach I reflected on the fact that my visual impairment had so slowed us down that we were still on the mountain when the weather finally improved ….I’d seen more than all the fully sighted walkers who had rushed past us and were no doubt in the pub by the time the sun came out …..smug or what?!

A day of small drawings

As the title suggests, today has been a day of graphite pencils rather than paint and brushes.  It has made a good change and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my few hours at the studio.  Yesterday I started playing around with a few ideas for drawings about Ailsa Craig and spent my last hour in the studio scribbling in a sketch book.  I quite liked one of the small drawings and today decided to try and do another version …..this time using a graphite pencil on board.  It made for some very nice marks and after doing one I got into it and over the next few hours did another three small pieces in this manner.  One of them based on the idea of looking across to the hills over on the Isle of Arran and the other two based on sketches I did up in Assynt a few years ago.

It is surprising what interesting marks can be made working onto wood as opposed to paper and in a similar way that the pastels I use pick up the surface of the paint, here the pencil picked up the small ridges in the primed surface. I was using a fairly soft graphite pencil most of the time – 6B, but for finer marks I worked with a 2B.  Each of the drawings are quite small …just A5 size and I may include several of these in a local exhibition next month.  The exhibition organiser asked especially for small pieces at the lower end of the price range.  I’ll post full details about this in a few weeks time.

Of course, now I’ve done these small pieces I’m already wondering quite what a larger piece would look like done in the same way?  As I already have several boards cut that are either 60 x 60 cm or 80 x 80 cm, I’ll probably try something at this size.  However, I’m getting a vague thought that perhaps something considerably bigger might work really well …perhaps 90 cm wide by 160 cm high.  Using the same scale of mark as the small pieces would be very time consuming on a large area but would be very interesting.  If I do try something like this then I think I’ll have to buy myself a good audio book to listen too while I’m drawing.

When I was in Speyer two years ago I worked on a fairly abstract painting that was I think 80 x 140 cm and I scribbled very fine marks into the whole of the surface.  This took me a couple of days of very slow work …and I was thankful there of having a good book to read while I worked.  Oh well, I guess it’s just a case of watch this space ….I’ll hopefully have time to try something like this soon.

I’ve just heard from ‘the gallery on the corner’ in Edinburgh that they’ve just sold one of my 76 x 23 cm paintings.  As they also sold one of my 30 x 30 cm pieces not long ago, I’ll have to get some replacements to them soon.  I have work going to The Strathearn Gallery for their Christmas Exhibition as well as several pieces going to The Framework Gallery in Troon for their pre Christmas exhibition too.  As I say, full details of both of these exhibitions soon ….the point is, that I’ll have to get a few new small acrylic and pastel pieces done ….it’s all go…..but very enjoyable!
