I’m running a little late this week and so this is going to be a very short blog.  I’m not quite sure what happened to all the time this week but suddenly it’s 21.00 on Friday evening!   I’ve spent most of the week since Saturday, at the studio ….all except Monday when we went walking ….and Thursday when we went across to Edinburgh.  The reason for this trip was to deliver some paintings to The Gallery on the Corner.  The works include two of the small postcard size paintings, one of my new 30 x 30 cm paintings, one of the 76 x 23 cm paintings and two of the large 80 x 80 cm pieces.   The gallery is increasing its wall space by opening a small café and so were looking for a little more work.  So then, if you’ve never visited The Gallery on the Corner or haven’t been for a while, why not call in and see the work they have.  For details of the gallery, click on the link at the side of this page.

As for the work I’ve been doing this week, well it’s been a bit of a battle ….and I lost!!!  After five days work on one new 80 x 80 cm acrylic and pastel piece, I decided it was going no where ….and I painted over it with white emulsion …ahhhh!  Oh well, that’s all part of painting I guess.  It’s not the first time and no doubt won’t be the last.  I think that the problem with the piece was the composition …if that’s wrong …well, you’re on a looser.  In the past I would probably have persevered only to have scrapped it after several more days.  I hope this means I’ve learnt from past errors …but I doubt it!  Not all is lost though as I’ve also been working on a new 80 x 80 cm oil painting on canvas and thankfully this is coming on quite well.  So then, hopefully in a week or two I can post an image of this piece ….hopefully!

One of the most difficult things about painting the landscape is I think, working out how to convey how big everything is. Without a point of reference ….something man made, capturing the vastness of a moor or mountain can be very challenging. With my fuzzy sight, I have just as much a problem when I’m actually out walking in these wild places ….judging whether I have an hour to walk to reach the top of a crag, or five minutes, without the aid of a map, is tricky. Occasionally though, you go somewhere that just reeks its huge scale.

On Monday we went to just such a place ….the base of the North Face of Ben Nevis.

We walked this, Scotland’s and the UK’s highest mountain several years ago by the standard ‘tourist’ path and although I stood at the top, I never really felt quite how big this mountain was. On Monday though, I got the idea.

A very good path leads up through the forest before following the stream that flows out from beneath the great cliffs of the north face. Your first view is from a small view point created in the forest but at this stage it just looked to me like another mountain. Once above the forest line though I started to realise just how big a lump of a hill Ben Nevis is. I thought the first cliffs were quite near but as we continued to walk towards them I realised we still had a good distance to walk. As we got closer the dark crags grew bigger and bigger and what I had thought was a single line of cliffs, became a series of great buttresses and a deep corrie – Coire na Ciste. Tucked up at the head of the glen beneath this and complex face, is the CIC Hut. It has been very well built so that it blends in with its dramatic surroundings and it was to this that we were heading.

Our friend and walking companion Guy had in the past climbed a couple of the routes on the North Face and it was his idea that we walk up to the CIC Hut. He assured me that it would not be time wasted and that I just had to see and experience this magnificent setting …he also suggested that it would be an excellent place to do some drawing and painting. Well, I can’t argue, he got it right on all accounts! We sat gawping at the face, so big, so complex and so beautiful. On this occasion I just brought my camera but this is definitely a place to return on another fine day to sit and draw.

I’m not quite sure why, but walking up this magnificent glen underneath the North Face of Ben Nevis, reminded me so much of the time I spent in Speyer the other summer …walking around the massive cathedral there. Just like on Monday beneath Ben Nevis, I used to end up with a crick in my neck from staring up at its highest towers and buttresses trying to work out how it all fitted together and how I might do a drawing or painting of it. In the end, I solved the problem in Speyer by matching scale with scale …in other words doing a very large drawing …4.2 m long by 1.5 m high. As we stood, tiny against this great natural structure …the highest in Scotland, I remembered the Speyer drawing and started to ponder on whether I ought to attempt another …this time based on the North Face of Ben Nevis.

I’ve taken a break from the larger and slightly more abstract oil paintings I was doing and since returning from our holiday up in Sutherland, have been working on several smaller acrylic and pastel pieces.

These paintings are based on views we had while walking in Sutherland and are slightly ‘tighter’ than much of the work I’ve been doing recently.  It has made a nice change and I’ve been enjoying working in this manner ….the wild landscape of the Flow Country is still very vividly marked in my head and I want to try and get some of that down while I remember it clearly.

The first painting, ‘Approaching snow shower, on the slopes of Ben Loyal, Sutherland’, was based on the very first walk of our holiday.  You may remember that we’d set off in bright sunshine to walk Ben Loyal, the magnificent mountain close to the north coast of Sutherland.  By the time we were clambering our way up the steep slopes towards the main ridge, the cloud had bubbled up all around and we were suddenly enveloped in a heavy snow shower.  It came in so quickly …one minute nothing and the next …heavy large snow flakes falling all around us  …well, whizzing by almost horizontally ..the wind had picked up as the shower arrived and the temperature dropped.  On that day, the cloud descended and stayed low for the next four hours and we decided to head back down and try again another day.  On this holiday of wild and cold weather, the next chance we got was our final day …and we made it to the top …and indeed, all the way along this great hill.

I did manage to do some quick sketching while we were out although not as much as perhaps I should have!  You know the trouble though ….once you start walking …well, you just want to carry on.  The thought, especially when it’s cold, of stopping and sitting to draw, is not always as enticing as striding along on the top of the mountain!  Anyway, here are a couple of the quick sketches I did.

The last two paintings are both based on the same day ….when we went to walk Beinn Griam Beg …one of two small (just under 600m) hills rising in the middle of the Flow Country.  Right from the start we were caught in frequent and at times heavy snow showers that swept in from the northwest and completely shrouded the hills ….and us.  It was quite a long walk  across the bog to the base of the hill and then a fairly gentle pull up onto a broad and in places stony ridge.  These two paintings try and show something of how remote this area is ….and a little about the nature of the conditions we experienced that day.

Some weeks are I guess, like this. Not much has happened really. We’ve not been away walking anywhere and have spent much of the time working. The thing is, I haven’t actually finished any paintings, or got any to a stage that I’d really want to show at the moment! But painting, (at least for me) is like that. Sometimes I just have to keep plodding on even if it does mean for the best part of a week, painting the wrong colours, putting the paint down in the wrong place and generally making a bit of a mess of things. I say to myself that this is where I learn but when I stand back and look at what I’ve done over the last few days, I’m not really sure if I’m convincing myself let alone anyone else. One thing though, is that I do know I will work my way through this little period and it’s so much easier working through it when you have a studio to work in.

Before I got this studio at the Courtyard, I was working from a room in the house. This was fine while the work was going well, but when I hit a difficult period like I have this week; it suddenly became even more difficult. What I mean is that when you’re working at home you can easily get distracted. You find that the thought of doing the washing or cleaning the bathroom, is far more interesting than tackling the problem of a difficult painting …..and so you put it off. When you have a studio and you know you’re down there for the day …well, there’s nothing for it but keep on plodding on …and on …and maybe swearing a little or throwing the paintbrush down in disgust …but you are confronting the problem and that is the important thing I think. This reminds me though, that we currently have several spaces available for rent at the Courtyard Studios in Irvine ….so, if you’re someone living in the area that has been thinking about getting a studio …why not come down and have a look at what’s available? So then, not much to report from my studio but I have just seen that Blairmore Gallery near Dunoon is to be re opening again shortly. Sadly one of the owners was seriously assaulted earlier this year and so they’ve been unable to open this year so far. Anyway, as I say, the good news is that he is now on the road to recovery and according to their website they’ll be back open in a few weeks time. They currently have three or four of my paintings but once I’m back from our trip I’ll see if I can arrange to go up and collect the old work and leave four of the new post card sized paintings for them. If you can get along once they’re open it will as I’ve said in the past, make for a good time. As well as having a good range of work, they also do excellent coffee and food. A tale of two Meall Tionails …..

For anyone out there who reads these blogs, you might remember that about a year ago I wrote about my plans to walk a wee hill tucked away amidst the bigger mountains of the Blackmount.  The hill in question was Meall Tionail …a rocky little hillock of just over 500m in height.  We’d been planning to walk this hill ever since my partner Anita saw it from one of its bigger neighbours and said that she’d like to sit and eat her sandwiches at the top of it one day ….it really is in a wonderful location, surrounded on three sides by bigger dramatic mountains and looking out on the other side to the expanse of Rannoch Moor.  Suffice to say that we didn’t make it last year as planned and so it had to wait until Monday this week before we finally got to go there.

With a pretty good forecast and following a reasonably dry period (the walk in involves crossing several streams) …it seemed the perfect place to go ….and so I rang our friend Guy to see if he wanted to join us.  Wanting to walk a tiny hill in the middle of much bigger ones seemed to be a daft enough proposal to him and he was all for it ….we’d pick him up from the station at half past six the next morning.

Meall Tionail is as I say, just a small hill …it’s the getting to it that takes the effort.  We chose to park the car at the Glencoe Ski Centre and walk the West Highland Way back south to Ba Bridge, then follow a path up the side of the river for around three miles to the summit of the hill…..I guess in total (though I haven’t made any accurate measurements ..about 13 – 14 miles for the day ….with a few hundred metres of ascent thrown in for good measure.  The weather was indeed, pretty good, the cloud was quite high and all of the bigger tops were clear …the upper slopes white with snow and looking very dramatic.  The sky was a mixture of dark clouds and bright sunshine and it made for some wonderful views and a great range of colours.  Needless to say we did a lot of stopping to look and snap away with our cameras and time went by faster than the miles under our boots.   Thankfully the path up the glen by the river proved a good one with small bridges over the numerous small streams.  At one point though the path appeared to disappear….and we were left scratching our heads and pawing over the maps ….we were confronted by a sizable stream and no sign of the path on the opposite bank.  Nothing for it but to splash our away across ….thankful now for the dry weather over the preceding weeks….and still we couldn’t figure out quite where we were or where we’d gone wrong.  We could see our hill though and on heading towards it and back towards the main river found our path …quite how it had got there was a bit of a mystery!

At around this point we’d been walking for about three hours and we still had a good distance to go to the base of the hill …let alone climb the thing.  As we’d set out at 9.15 am, it was looking like being a late finish…..much to my dismay there were murmurings in the ranks that perhaps we’d only get to the base of the hill.   In all honesty though we were running a little late and when we got to the base of the hill we did in fact decide that that was as far as we could go ….ahhhhhh, after all these years waiting to come here and the long drive and the four hours walk in …and not to get to the top …well, it was a bit galling.  We could have got to the top and back down to the car before it got dark …but we’d have had to have rushed it which was completely against the whole idea of going there in the first place.  Nothing for it but to return some time in the future …and allow more time.

We’d had a great day and seen some wonderful scenery, but I hadn’t realised how disappointed Anita was at not getting to sit and eat her lunch at the summit.  When we finally got home she said, ‘how about going back on Wednesday …the forecast is almost as good?’  I saw from her face that she wasn’t joking …and well, we haven’t done anything as daft as that for a long time …so Wednesday was booked and with an extra early start …up at 03.50, out and away from Irvine at 05.15!  Mad or what?!

This time though the weather wasn’t as good as the forecast had predicted and on reaching Loch Lomond it started to rain and both the Luss Hills and Ben Lomond disappeared into a grey wet slurp.  It continued to rain all the way to the edge of Rannoch Moor where at last we saw a few bursts of sunshine over to the east.  The mountains were all shrouded in mist and it was a very different scene from just 48 hours earlier.  This time Anita and I started walking at 07.50 and with fewer things to photograph and less stops we made good time.  It stayed dry all the way to Ba Bridge but after that the rain came back …and stayed for the next almost eight hours.  The beautiful snow covered and dramatic peaks bursting with colour in the bright spring sunshine of just two days earlier,  had been replaced by an equally beautiful scene of dark brooding hills disappearing up into the cloud.  It was cold and very wet …but we could see our little hill up ahead …its summit well below the cloud base ….one advantage of climbing a wee hill!

We arrived at the base of Meall Tionail and after a brief stop headed uphill on a mixture of grass and stone, crossing numerous small streams that were coming to life again with all the rain.  By this time the wind had picked up and it was blowing the rain along in sheets, but as we reached the top of the hill, it really didn’t matter …as Anita said, ‘This is even better than I had imagined’ …and indeed it was.  The summit is topped by a series of crags …the outer edge like battlements of an ancient castle …the views out over the glen towards Rannoch Moor quite stunning even in this wild weather.  Big mountains rose all around us, occasionally giving glimpses of the snow covered ridges for the most part hidden in cloud.  Wow, what a spot.  Anita did finally get to eat her sandwiches on the top, albeit hunched against the wind and driving rain ….but what the heck …we’ made it and it felt very special.

Art at the Beresford Wine Bar and Gallery, Ayr

This time yesterday evening I was at the Beresford Wine Bar and Gallery in Ayr.  I had been invited along with four of my Courtyard Studio colleagues – Chick McGeehan, Alison Thomas, David Reid and James O’Dea, to take part in a group exhibition at the Beresford gallery.

I’m delighted to report that the preview went well.  The work looked good and we had a good turn out – indeed, it was a very congested little place of an hour or so.  Gallery manager, Margaret, had asked us to provide about six pieces each and so I took the plunge and decided to include two of my new 80 x 80 cm oil paintings, two of the regular 30 x 30 cm pieces and two of the new post card size paintings.  It is the first time I’ve exhibited either the large oil paintings or any of the wee post card pieces ….so I was a little concerned quite how they’d look up on the wall.  Thankfully when we got there and I saw them up for the first time, I was quite pleased……I never like to go over the top …but yes, they seemed to work quite well.

A slight change of subject matter

I’ve just placed an order for some new canvases and some more oil paint. It’s always exciting waiting for the boxes to arrive …and opening them up ….even though I know exactly what is in them! I guess I still haven’t grown up yet. I’ve used a good deal of the materials I bought back in October when I first moved into Studio J and started working in oils again and so I’ve needed to restock. That said however, I’ve decided to start working on a few new paintings based not on my hill trips but back here on the harbour side.

During my first year at the Courtyard I did a lot of harbour side drawings and paintings and now, almost nine years on, I’m going to do a few more. The reason for this is that another of the regular sights on Irvine harbour side looks soon to be gone ….to Australia apparently. . The wonderful old ship the ‘City of Adelaide’ that has been sat on a slipway about a kilometre up river from the Courtyard is to be moved and taken to Australia to be restored. As I write, a large steel cradle is being constructed to support the old wooden boat when they move it. I really don’t know much about this but Irvine based artist Hugh Loney has been taking a particular interest in it and has recorded some fascinating footage that can be viewed at Hugh Loney´s Channel on YouTube.

For me though, this old ship has been a familiar dark and fairly fuzzy blob sat at the side of the river each day when I walk to and from the studios. I’ve never been really close to it and have to use my monocular to see it slightly better. That said though, it’s a fuzzy blob that I like and it’ll be a shame to see it go …although of course, the important thing is that it will be preserved.

So then, while it is still here, it seems a good idea to try and do a few paintings of it …or more realistically ….of the fuzzy blob that is the ‘City of Adelaide’ to me. I’m not sure quite how I’ll go about it but will keep you informed and will post images on my Face Book page as things progress. Firstly though, I have to wait for the delivery of my new canvases …which should arrive today with a bit of luck. In the meantime ….here are a few of the drawings I did when I first arrived at the Courtyard.

Variations on a theme

Over the last few years I’ve done several versions of some of my paintings. Most of these started out as small 30 x 30 cm paintings but I’ve started to develop them at the bigger 80 x 80 cm size.

Revisiting a painting is not simply a case of reproducing the original but rather it’s a chance to create something that is new but on the same theme. One can try slightly different compositions, colours and marks, perhaps in a way, forgetting the original place and simply developing the paint and pastel.

The move from 30 x 30cm to 80 x 80cm has been particularly interesting. The increased surface area of the painting allows so much more scope, particularly with the consistency of the paint and the means by which it is applied.

The paintings included here are all based on a particular event one afternoon several years ago when I was walking with a group from our local club Air na Creagan. It was sometime in February I seem to remember and we’d travelled up to Braemar on a Friday evening with the aim of climbing Lochnagar the following day. We’d booked into the youth hostel for the weekend and were all looking forward to some good winter walking. Quite how wintry it was to be only became apparent as the weekend approached and we watched the forecasts. We arrived in Braemar in the early evening, crossing the high road through Glen Shee in the dark but with the first few flakes of snow falling lightly out of the gloom and being caught in the light of the headlights. As was customary on such weekends, first stop after arriving was the local hotel for food and a beer and by the time we started walking back up the street to the youth hostel it was snowing if not hard, then certainly steadily. Talk before we went to bed was of planning something less taxing than Lochnagar. If it carried on snowing over night we’d not even get the cars to the start point let alone want to tackle what might be thick fresh snow. In the end, the alternative was to do a circular walk out of Braemar and up and over Morone ….a gentle hill of I seem to remember around 800 m.

In the morning we arose to a good few centimetres of snow and although not too bad it wasn’t really the weather to be driving too far on small roads …and the wind had really picked up, so it would be uncomfortable higher up. Everywhere did look pretty wonderful though as we walked through the little town and picked up the path zig zagging its way up the slopes of Morone. But what a difference as we got out onto the high open and unprotected slopes near the summit. The snow was coming in heavy and quite lengthy showers and as they blew in the winds increased dramatically. There is a radio mast at the top with an access land drover track leading to it from the other side of the hill and at that point we stopped in the slight shelter offered by the wall of the hut. The wind chill up there was severe and despite this being a very modest little hill, this certainly wasn’t the place to hang around. Our planned route led across the summit plateau and then descended into a glen …before an easy walk back out and into the town. The walk across the top of the hill was difficult though…. the snow being blasted along horizontally in a real blizzard. It was hard to see for a while until eventually we started to descend into the glen ..and once again got some shelter from the surrounding hills. After a bit of a battle through in places quite deep snow we picked up another estate track and decided to sit for a while and catch up on a late lunch. As we sat there, we watched the sky darken and then very rapidly this huge snow shower poured over the hilltop at the end of the glen and raced towards us. It was a very impressive sight and one that has stuck with me….it is also the subject of these five paintings.

The snow didn’t go away over night and on Sunday morning we arose to quite thick snow …15 + cm and it was still falling.,. The Glen Shee road was closed and after waiting for several hours for it to ease, we set out for home…..along the only road out …..a tricky drive east to Aberdeen and then back via Dundee! As the whole of Scotland had been hit by the snow none of the roads were very good and our journey back to Ayrshire took many hours. It was quite a weekend!

Gripe of the week…..!

No nice walks or interesting trips to report this week I’m afraid …it’s just been a week working away down at the studio. So I guess this is going to be a rather short blog.

Normally at this time of year there are quite a few visitors on the harbour side in Irvine and we normally expect a few of them to call into the Courtyard to have a look at what some of the artists are doing. This year though, it does seem to be quite quiet …partly due I’m sure to the rather damp summer we’ve been having. But along with this, few of them seem to be calling into the studios. Until last summer we used to have good signage on the studio building ….not just saying Courtyard Artists Studios …but also saying ‘visitors welcome’. Then, last summer we had the long waited ‘make-over’. The builders moved in (while I was away in Germany), and completely transformed much of the studio building … creating new studio space in the roof, adding much needed windows and therefore light and heating and water to all the spaces. On top of this new doors were fixed, the wee kitchen space and toilets re built and the structural problems fixed. Finally the building was completely painted to make it look so much better from the outside. When I returned from Speyer I was really impressed by what they’d done My studio space which had had a big problem with damp and rotting floor boards was now dry and with a new floor ….it was looking good for 2011.

With the addition of the new studio spaces we’d also had several new artists and craftspeople move in and this was very good. The one thing though that they’ve not bothered to do after all this good work ….is to replace the signage. Now then, this may seem a minor thing after spending £150,000 on building work …and perhaps a bit of a gripe on my part …but it’s been a year now and we still haven’t got any signs saying what we are …and, as importantly …that people are welcome to come in….and purchase work if they wish. Hence, this summer we’ve seen a drastic reduction in visitor numbers and with it …sales. Of course this could be put down to the general state of the economy …but even so, if folk passing don’t know what we are …they’re hardly likely to come in and buy a painting. It seems sad but interesting to note that one year on, four of the six new artists have already left ….finding it difficult to pay the rents …which are still very good value but are still difficult for young artists just starting out, to meet. During my time at the Courtyard I’ve always made sure that I invite people in and made them welcome. Through this I’ve always managed to sell a good number of works directly from the studio …at the same price as they are up in galleries. By doing this and giving a little of my time each week to show people what I’m doing, I have always managed to cover my studio rent each year. Of course I realise that to say there is a direct correlation between these artists leaving and the fact that we have no signage and visitors, is perhaps stretching it a bit …but I do think that after doing so much good work on the building, this final lapse has done much to undermine some of the very artists the building is supposed to help. I do realise there are planning regulations etc, but surely all we need is a new version of the old signs, no new snazzy designs …it surely can’t be that difficult. The summer of course is now nearly over …visitors will have gone by the end of October and so a whole season has been lost. We have our Studio Open Weekend coming up on 1st / 2nd October ….so any guesses as to whether we’ll have our signs up for then?!!

Right, that’s my gripe of the week over and done. As I said, I’ve been painting all this week. The first four of the thirteen new 80 x 80 cm paintings have just come back from the Waverley Gallery in Prestwick where they’ve been framed. Five more are currently being framed and I’m working on the last four right now. One of these, based on a smaller piece I did three or four years ago, is coming on quite well. I bought a special ‘thickener’ for acrylic paint the other week and have been using this recently. It gives the paint a nice sticky and slightly granular texture and when dragged down using a big brush, gives just the kind of marks I like. The painting still has some way to go …but I took this photo of it just before leaving the studio last evening.

Finally ….good news. My five paintings have arrived safely at the Green Drake Gallery and Arts Centre in Pennsylvania. I don’t know why I worry so much …but I always find it a little stressful when shipping work. Anyway, that’s that, …..just wait now until the exhibition opens in a few weeks. More details to come nearer the time.

As anyone who reads this blog regularly will know, I work at the Courtyard Studios on the harbour side at Irvine. My space is in the old part of the building that faces the road, and across that, the river and saltings. Until three days ago, just 200 m up the road was an old crane, one of several that used to be used to load and unload vessels visiting Irvine. Even to an outsider like me, it seemed to be an important part of the harbour side, indeed of Irvine’s history …..It was definitely a local landmark and one that gave interest to this wonderful harbour side.

That was of course until three days ago….when it was dismantled and carted half a mile away to be placed in the yard of the Maritime Museum. For the last five or so years I guess, the old crane had not been maintained and the buffeting winter gales had taken their toll. Bits had blown off, the paintwork peeled and the jib was a mass of rust. It seems a shame that such an important part of the towns history and identity as a once important port, should be allowed to fall into disrepair. On hearing of the cranes demise, one of my colleagues visited the towns planning department and apparently the crane has been taken to the Maritime Museum and if funds become available it’ll be restored and a place found for it once again…..lets hope so. Of course, its removal has nothing to do with the planned redevelopment of the Harbour side area ……hmmmmm!

Today has been a beautiful day, bright sun and the first real heat of the year. We had thought about heading for a hill today but as we both have a lot of work on we decided to have a less tiring day. Instead, we walked from my studio, out to the sea and then along the beach all the way to Troon, several miles down the Ayrshire coast.

We started, of course, by looking at the space where the crane used to be ..nothing now but the old wooden jetty that similarly, seems to be falling into disrepair and has been fenced off for a good number of years. Will this too be removed at some stage? Just beyond this point the River Irvine meets the River Garnock and together they flow the last few hundred metres before entering the Firth of Clyde. They flow under the footbridge that was built at huge expense to get visitors over to the Big Idea …a science centre that was built to mark the millennium. Sadly, although it was apparently very good, it only lasted for a few years before closing and sitting empty ever since. The wonderful bridge (built to open and close to allow boats access to the harbour) was opened after the final visitor left and has remained so ever since. Let’s hope the new planned developments for the harbour side are going to be better thought out than this our local millennium white elephant.

Most of the area between the Courtyard studios and the sea is grass. It’s a large area containing a large pond, good quality footpaths and is a fine safe area for folk to come for a stroll, joggers to jog and kids to play …it’s an important recreational area for the town. Today with this warm weather, a lot of people had made their way to the harbour side, all enjoying the grassed areas, the fine views and the beach. The wild life too was out in force this morning with the Skylarks singing above the dunes and the saltings, Eider ducks floating just off of the beach, Oyster catchers and Curlews calling from the mud on the far side of the river.

Much of this area is due for development …housing, retail and commercial units apparently. And there was a big sign on the bridge that suggested development on the far side of the river too. If this takes place I wonder what will happen to the wildlife and whether this now quite peaceful area that pulls in visitors both local and from far afield, will lose the very thing that people come for.

People say that with the studios being right in the middle of the new development, that it’ll be good for business. Maybe, but as an artist I worry about what the developers have in mind. I very much doubt that it is going to be as peaceful, as beautiful or indeed as interesting as it is now. Is the missing crane just a taste of things to come? We’ll wait and see I guess. I hope in a few years I can write and say I was wrong.
