It has been such a busy year that I’ve only just got back to working on another large scale painting.  This piece was the last big canvas I did, completing it in the autumn last year.  The painting, done in thick over-lapping brush strokes in traditional oil colour, is based on views we’ve seen while walking the hills around Blackmount.  On this scale the painting tends towards the abstract but hopefully conveys much of the drama, colour and atmosphere of this Wild Mountain and moor-land landscape.

This painting is currently stored at my studio and can be viewed on request.  Visitors are always welcome.

This painting is currently hanging on the wall in my studio and is one that I did several years ago after a very snowy ascent of Ben Oss.  I’ve always liked this piece and feel that it really captures the moment as we stood at the summit and the snow stopped falling and the cloud began to break.  Prior to this we’d climbed the hill in driving horizontal snow and strong winds and it really wasn’t very pleasant.  The weather changed so quickly for the better once we’d reached the summit that we descended in rapidly clearing skies and in bright sunshine.  Anyway, if you’re interested in seeing this piece and live in the Ayrshire area, do call in to the studio sometime.

If you’ve read this week’s blog you will see we were out walking on Ghlas Beinn, on the edge of Rannoch Moor last Sunday.  It’s a short walk we do most winters and so I thought I’d use this painting as my Artwork of the Week this week.  I did this picture after our first ever visit there.  The mountains on that occasion had a lot of snow on them and the conditions were quite wild……making for very dramatic views of the Blackmount.

This large oil painting was completed a few weeks ago before my trip to Brazil.  At the time I thought I’d need to leave it for a while to make sure I was happy with it……and the two week long break for the Open Weekend and the flying visit to Brazil, were perfect.  When I got back to the studio a few days ago and saw this painting, I decided that it was indeed finished.

The painting is based on an earlier smaller piece I did several years ago.  I wanted to try and develop the image in this larger painting and have used thick layers of oil paint put down with a large course brush to build up the surface.

This painting will be included in my forthcoming exhibition at the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine.  The exhibition runs from November 28th 2014 – January 09 2015.  I hope you can get along to see this piece.

You’ve seen this painting before but I thought I’d use it again this week as it is one of the two pieces I have showing  in the  2014 North Ayrshire Open Art Exhibition.  This annual exhibition opens on Saturday with the preview tomorrow evening and it runs for two weeks.   The exhibition always contains a large selection of work and there is usually something for everyone…..so it is well worth a visit.   Full details coming soon on my Face Book page, Keith Salmon – Scottish Landscape Artist.

We’re heading over to the Isle of Arran and Glen Rosa again tomorrow.  I need to walk up to the head of the glen to do some more sketching and to take some more photos as preparation for my big drawing project in November and December this year.  I am starting to get quite a good idea now as to how to go about this big piece of work and tomorrows visit to the glen will hopefully give me all the information I need.   That said, the forecast is a little ‘iffy’ so if the cloud is right down we may have to make another visit later in the summer.

Anyway, this got me thinking about the work I’d already done on Glen Rosa and I thought I’d use this drawing as my ‘artwork of the week’.  This is one of several I’ve created as trial pieces for the big drawing ….this is approximately 125 x 80 cm and is currently at the studio …rolled up.  Should you like to see it up close however …do pop into the studio.

I finished this painting about a month ago and yesterday my partner Anita put it into a frame.  It’s always good seeing something finally framed and up on the wall and I’m quite pleased with this piece.

I’ve been asked so many times over the years whether I’d painted the view across the water to Arran, but in the past had always been interested in view points that were up in the hills.  I finally gave in to demand and this is what I came up with.  It’s the kind of view I get when I look towards the Isle of Arran from the mouth of the River Irvine near to my studio ….but looking through my monocular.

As I say, the painting is now up on my studio wall and can be viewed any time I’m working there.  As it’s the 2014 Open Studio Ayrshire event this weekend (Sat / Sun 26 / 27th April) why not call in to see it as part of your studio trail this weekend?  There are 47 venues open throughout Ayrshire ….more details: www.openstudiosayrshire.com

I created this painting after our first visit to Ghlas Bheinn.  I’ve now used the left hand side of it as the starting point for a new more abstract 80 x 80 cm oil painting, (see my latest blog).   Both are based on a scene looking towards Clach Leathad with its huge southern face covered in snow.

If you’ve been to my blog this week, you’ll have read that we had our first snowy walk this winter ….on Beinn Chaorach.  As we were walking though, we got some great views across to Beinn Dubhchraig and the view reminded me of this painting.

I did this back in 2005 after a short walk on a much colder day.  My friend Guy and I had gone to do a walk on Ben Challum (the Munro next to Beinn Chaorach) and although we never had time to reach even its southern top, we did get some splendid views.  On that morning, thick banks of cloud sat over Beinn Dubhchraig and gradually broke and cleared as the morning passed.  I seem to remember sitting for quite a while just taking in the scene and then having to shelter as a heavy snow shower passed by.

After our walk last Sunday I think I may try creating another more up to date version of this painting…..this time of the mountain in snow but with the autumn colours in the glen below.

It’s feeling decidedly cold today and although it’s not anywhere near this cold, I thought I’d have a winter scene for this weeks ‘Artwork of the week’.

This is one of my small post card sized paintings and is based on the view we had as we descended from the NE ridge of Ben Lui a number of years ago now.  It’s difficult for me to work at this scale ….I’m struggling to see what I’m doing …but this piece actually worked quite well I think.
