‘A late December afternoon, Glen Lyon’

‘Late December afternoon, Glen Lyon’ – 2016

‘A late December afternoon, Glen Lyon’, Oil on canvas, 2016, 80 x 80 cm

Over the last few years I’ve gradually been developing my use of traditional oil colours. and this is one of my most recent paintings.  As with most of these new pieces, this is created using, for the most part, a very large old horse hair house painting brush.  The paint is put down in thick layers that I allow to dry, or almost dry, before adding more paint.  The course bristles of the brush create marks in the paint surface and help me to generate the textured surface that I like.

This painting is based on an earlier small acrylic and pastel work I did about 10 years ago, following a cold winter walk in Glen Lyon.  I always liked the original and I thought it would be interesting to re-visit the subject using oil and on a larger scale too.

A selection of these new oil paintings along with many smaller acrylic and pastel works are always available at my studio and visitors are always welcome to call in.  You can contact me to check on my studio opening times: 07742 437425.

‘Approaching snow shower, Rannoch Moor’

361 'Approaching snow shower, Rannoch Moor', Oil on canvas, 2015, 80 x 80 cm

‘Approaching snow shower, Rannoch Moor’, Oil on canvas, 2015, 80 x 80 cm

Price: £1750

I completed this painting last year after a fabulous little winter walk on Ghlas Bheinn on the edge of Rannoch Moor.  It was a day of short heavy snow showers interspersed with brief bursts of bright sunshine.

I was reminded of this piece just last Saturday as we walked the same route but under perfect summer conditions.  Everything was very different with the colours being much greener and the views much more expansive under the clear June skies.  I may have to do another painting, this time based on Ghlas Bheinn in the summer.  See my blog for photos and details of our walk last Saturday on Ghlas Bheinn.

‘Towards the Blackmount, snow, shower’

'Towards the Blackmount, snow, shower', Oil on canvas, 2015, 80 x 80 cm

‘Towards the Blackmount, snow, shower’, Oil on canvas, 2015, 80 x 80 cm

Price: £1750

This is one of the paintings I created last year following our short walk along the undulating ridge of Ghlas Bheinn.  A day of bright sunshine at times, but with heavy blustery snow showers that swept in and left a thin coating of snow on the grass.  This painting is one of the new canvases on which I used thick oil paint put down in large sweeping marks.

The painting is currently on display in my studio so do pop in sometime to see it if you live close by.  If you have far to travel however, do check first (call 07742 437425)….. just to make sure I’m in.  If the weather is good I may be out on another hill!
