‘Glen Etive, winter afternoon
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 60 x 30 cm
Ref: 156
Framed.
Price: £575 Available Currently being exhibited at ScotlandArt.com, Glasgow.

About this painting:
Region: West Highlands
This is one of a series of paintings that are all based on one brief time a few years ago. We’d been returning through Glen Coe on a rather heavy winter’s afternoon and as we drove by the end of Glen Etive we saw this wonderful scene. The summits were snow topped with odd patches of snow right down to road level in places. The clouds were swirling and breaking around and over the hills with the late afternoon light making everything very atmospheric.

'On the edge of Rannoch Moor, December'

‘On the edge of Rannoch Moor, December’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 76 x 23 cm
Ref: 149
Framed.
Price:  £575 Available Currently being exhibited at Fisher Gallery, Pittenweem, Fife

About this painting:
Region:  West Highlands
This is another of the paintings I’ve completed since our memorable short walk on the edge of Rannoch Moor back in late December. It really was a wonderful mixture of light and colour that day. As the big threatening clouds wandered by it would suddenly become quite dark for a few minutes with just odd patches of dim sunlight catching the moor-land grass. In this painting I’ve used a gold acrylic mixed with other colours to try and capture a little bit of the magic as the sun catches the beautiful winter vegetation.

'Winter day, Blackmount'

‘Winters day, Blackmount’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 30 x 30 cm
Ref: 151
Framed
Price: £400 Available Currently being exhibited at the Fisher Gallery, Pittenweem, Fife

About this painting:
Region:  West Highlands
Based on the rather flattened and limited view I get when looking at the hills through a monocular, this painting looks toward the snow covered hills on the Blackmount. I used somewhat thicker paint for this picture which gives it an interesting surface and one that works well with the subject.

'Above Cononish'

‘Above Cononish’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 20 x 40 cm
Ref: 150
Framed
Price: £380 Available Currently being exhibited at the Fisher Gallery.

About this painting:
Region: Southern Highlands
The original version of this painting was much larger but sadly it really didn’t work well. I did however like the thick texture and marks in some areas of the painting and decided recently to cut three smaller sections out of the original …and then re work them. ‘Above Cononish’ (20 x 40cm) is one of these. For me, this is a far better reminder of this moment as we descended the hillside above Cononish several winters ago. Creating a good composition is sometimes as much about taking away as it is about adding paint.

´Below Mid-hill, Luss´

‘Below Mid Hill, Luss’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2009, 90 x 60 cm
Ref: 129
Framed without glass in a simple cream coloured wooden frame.
Price including P&P (within UK) :  £950 Available

About this painting:
Region: Southern Highlands
The walk around Beinn Dubh and Mid Hill above Luss is one of my favourites.   The hills aren’t huge but they are steep and in winter can offer a surprisingly challenging few hours.  This painting is based on just such a day, when on the tops the wind was gusting 50 mph with a wind chill of  around -20C and in the shelter of the glen …it was more like spring.  What the difference a few hundred metres can make.

‘From Beinn Inverveigh, October’,
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 60 x 60 cm
Ref:147
Price: £N/A Available at Strathearn Gallery, Creiff.

About this painting:
Region:  West Highlands
Back in October 2009 a friend and I visited this little hill in very bad weather.  The forecast was for persistent heavy rain and severe gales.  As it turned out, it wasn’t quite that bad and despite a drenching we had a great day that even included a short break in the conditions.  For a while the sky got brighter and the wonderful colours of the various grasses, heathers and bracken were rally intense.

´On Rannoch Moor, December Afternoon´

‘On Rannoch Moor, December afternoon’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 76 x 23 cm
Ref:143
Price: SOLD Exhibited at Strathearn Gallery, Creiff.

About this painting:
Region:  West Highlands
The drive across the edge of Rannoch Moor between Blackmount and Glen Coe is always special.  A few days before Christmas, we decided to take a short walk along a broad heathery low ridge that stands just off the road on the edge of the moor.  It was the day before the recent cold snap really set in and we experienced almost perfect conditions; dark heavy shower clouds with bright bursts of sunshine bringing out all the colours of the moor and occasionally catching the snow higher up on the big hills.

Ref: 142

Price: SOLD including P&P (within UK). Exhibited at Strathearn Gallery, Creiff in March, 2010.

About this painting:
Region: West Highlands
The mountains can look stunning in full winter conditions, but when it turns nasty they can also be very formidable.  Of course you don’t always have to be right in amongst them to experience this.  I watched  this splendid but quite threatening display through a monocular from a lower and more secure location!

Acrylic & Pastel, 2009, 80 x 80 cm
Ref:138

Price: £N/A Available at Strathearn Gallery, Creiff.

About this painting:
Region: Southern Highlands
It’s quite amazing just how bright old bracken can appear in the fading light of a winter day.  This painting plays on this idea and tries to capture the cold late afternoon light witnessed on a visit into Glen Lyon a few years ago.

'Breaking cloud, Am Bodaach', Acyrlic & Pastel, 2010, 80 x 80 cm

‘Breaking cloud, Am Bodach’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 80 x 80 cm
Ref: 144

Price: SOLD Exhibited at Strathearn Gallery, Creiff in March, 2010.

About this painting:
Am Bodach, in the Mamores, is, like all the summits in this region a fine one.  It’s very rocky and steep and on a day of heavy showers a couple of years ago it completely disappeared during one such heavy down pour.  Then, quite quickly, the cloud began to break and the steep and quite daunting approach to the hill loomed in front of us.  This is quite a large painting and one of a number of versions I’ve done that are based on this particular moment.

'Passing shower, Isle of Arran'

‘Passing shower, Isle of Arran’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2010, 30 x 30 cm

Price: SOLD

About this painting:
When you arrive at Brodick on the Isle of Arran, the view of Goatfell is very special.  It rises steeply above the bay and is the highest point on the island.  Last year as we walked along the coast towards this hill, we were caught in a series of early morning rain showers and far from spoiling the view they actually made it even better especially in the early light.

‘Beinn Liath Mhor’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2009, 30 x 30 cm,
This painting is framed without glass in a simple 7cm wide cream coloured wooden frame with a thin gold coloured filler between the painting and frame.
Price: £275 including P&P (within UK) Available

About the painting:
This is one of several small paintings I’ve done based on a day on Beinn Liath  Mhor, one of the big hills that lie to the north of Glen Carron in the NW Highlands.  The hill has a wonderful undulating ridge that runs for a couple of kilometres with the summit at its far, northern end.  We’d planned to walk this but on reaching the southern end of the ridge and starting along it, I found it was just a little too airy in places  ..certainly for someone with little sight!  So then, this is the view from the point I had to turn back.  It was an amazing secen with the mists collecting on the eastern side of the ridge and then every now and again ..bubbling up and flowing over to completely cover the hill, before sinking back again a short while later.

‘From Conival, Assynt’
Acrylic & Pastel, 2009, 30 x 30cm
This painting is framed without glass in a simple 7cm wide cream coloured wooden frame with a thin gold coloured filler between the painting and frame.

Price: SOLD Exhibited at Strathearn Gallery, Creiff in March, 2010.

About this painting:
Conival and its neighbour Ben Mor Assynt lie in the wild and remote country.  The hills are littered with boulders and on the day we were there, a stunning day in early May, the landscape appeared as a great patchwork of colour, light and texture. This is one of two paintings I’ve done based on the view looking NW from Conival.

‘Autumn grass, Beinn Inverviegh’

This painting is framed without glass in a simple 7cm wide cream coloured wooden frame with a thin gold coloured filler between the painting and frame.
Price: £275 including P&P (within UK) Available

About this painting:
On what turned out to be a pretty foul day earlier this autumn, a friend and I went for a short walk up the very modest little hill – Beinn Inverveigh.  It’s normally a great vantage point for views of the bigger hills of Bridge of Orchy and the Blackmount.  On this day though they were all shrouded in think cloud and so we found ourselves concentrating much more on the views close up.  The colours of the windswept grass were just quite amazing and made up completely for the lack views on the grander scale.

Acrylic & Pastel, 2009, 90 x 60cm
This painting is framed with out glass in a simple cream coloured wooden frame.
Price: £950 including P&P (within UK) Available

About this painting:
Beinn Dorain is the fine hill that rises above Bridge of Orchy and the A82.  I’d climbed it twice before and on both occasions never saw a thing – the whole of the summit being well shrouded in thick mist.  On my third attempt at getting a view I was lucky.  It was a fabulous February day with large patches of icy snow and to the south-east a partial temperature inversion with the peaks of Ben Lui and Ben Lomand appearing through the cloud.  This was a mid week day and we only saw one other person …the perfect spot to have lunch and sit and take in the quietness and beauty of the location.
